Memory foam and polyfoam drive the highest emissions because they are petroleum-based polyurethane, the exact material the peer-reviewed studies measured. Natural latex sits at the bottom because it is made from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree, not from polyurethane, so it does not off-gas the same synthetic VOCs.

How to Reduce Mattress Off-Gassing

You can speed up off-gassing by giving the early spike somewhere to go. Because emissions peak in the first days and rise with heat, airflow and time do most of the work.

  1. Unwrap the mattress right away in a well-ventilated room. The plastic wrap traps fumes, so opening it starts the decay clock.
  2. Air it out for at least 2 to 3 days before sleeping on it if you can. This covers the 24-to-72-hour peak.
  3. Maximize airflow. Open windows and run an oscillating fan across the surface to carry VOCs out.
  4. Apply baking soda, let it sit, then vacuum to help absorb surface odor.
  5. Choose certified low-VOC or natural materials to limit how much off-gasses in the first place.

The one lever buyers fully control is what the mattress is made of. A certified low-VOC or natural mattress starts with a much smaller chemical load, so there is less to air out.

Natural Materials and Off-Gassing

The VOCs measured in every study above come from petroleum-based foam and synthetic flame retardants. A mattress built without those materials does not have the same source to off-gas.
