Fiberglass sat in the interior fire barrier of 13.1% of US mattress units in the mattress industry's January 2020 report to California regulators. By the January 2023 report, that share was 8.6%. In the January 2026 report, fewer than four producers reported using it at all, so the figure was withheld.
That is the clearest read available on how common fiberglass in mattresses really is, and almost nobody quotes it. Most pages on this topic cite a review site's tally of its own product catalogue instead.
We pulled 50 statistics from mandated regulatory filings, peer-reviewed lab testing, government recall databases, and the flammability rules in both countries. Most of the hard data is American, because Canada runs no equivalent survey. Every figure below carries its country and its date.
The best prevalence data on fiberglass comes from a survey California law requires mattress producers to file, and it counts production units rather than product listings. Three editions of that filing exist, and together they show fiberglass falling out of the US market over six years.
1. Fiberglass was in the interior fire barrier of 13.1% of US mattress units in the January 2020 filing. The figure comes from the International Sleep Products Association survey of flame-resistant fibers submitted to California regulators.
2. Fiberglass was also used in the exterior fire barrier of 2.0% of US mattress units in that same January 2020 filing. Exterior placement puts the material closer to the sleeper than an inner sock does.
3. Producers responding to the January 2020 mattress industry survey accounted for roughly 56% of all new mattresses estimated to be made by US producers that quarter. That coverage figure is what separates this dataset from a catalogue tally, because it states its own sampling frame.
4. Fiberglass use in US mattress interior fire barriers fell to 8.6% by the January 2023 filing. The January 2023 edition of the same producer survey recorded the drop, about a third down from the first filing.
5. Fiberglass fell below the reporting threshold entirely in the January 2026 filing. The most recent edition of the survey withholds a figure when fewer than four respondents report a given material. Withheld means fewer than four producers, not zero producers, and the two are not the same thing.

6. Wool and other animal fibres rose from 0.1% to 0.6% to 5.4% of US mattress interior fire barriers across the January 2020, January 2023 and January 2026 filings. That is a 54-fold increase in the share of US mattress fire barriers using an animal fibre.
7. Silica-embedded rayon now holds 83.4% of US mattress interior fire barriers, up from 67.6% in the January 2020 filing. It dipped to 58.1% in the January 2023 filing before taking the largest share of the category.
8. Modacrylic treated with antimony trioxide fell from 13.6% of US mattress interior fire barriers in January 2020 to 6.0% in January 2023, then below the reporting threshold in January 2026. Two of the four leading fire-barrier fibres from 2020 are now reported by fewer than four producers each.

9. One mattress review site's tally of its own product catalogue put fiberglass prevalence at 7.8%. NapLab reports that 32 of the 410 models it has catalogued contain fiberglass, 367 do not, and 11 are unclear. That number is the one the search results and AI summaries quote most often, and it is a count of reviewed products with no stated sampling frame, not a measure of the market.
Two caveats belong with these figures. The association changed its withholding threshold from three respondents to four between the first and second filings, so the 2020 to 2023 comparison carries a small methodology change. And the January 2026 document repeats the survey-period wording from its predecessor, so the safe attribution is to the filing date rather than to a survey quarter.
Two independent government-linked testing efforts have measured what is actually inside mattress covers. Both found fiberglass present in the barrier layer and largely contained, with small amounts migrating into neighbouring fabric.
10. Fiberglass was found in two of four new mattresses tested by California's health department. Researchers bought a Sealy, a Modway, a Zinus and a Graco crib mattress from common online outlets and analysed the covers, publishing the results in a peer-reviewed study of flame-resistant fibres in mattress covers.
11. The inner sock layers of the two mattresses that contained fiberglass ran 50% and 75% fiberglass by mass. The sock is a sealed sleeve of fabric sitting under the outer cover, not a loose layer.
12. Up to 1% of the fiberglass in the two affected covers had migrated out of the inner sock into adjacent fabric layers. The authors describe that as a potential exposure risk specifically if the zipper on the outer cover is opened.
13. No fiberglass reached the sleeping surface of any of the four mattresses tested. The top cover, the layer a sheet and a sleeper touch, was clear on all four samples as purchased.

14. Five trace fiberglass fibres were recovered from the bottom outer cover of one of the four mattresses tested. That was the full extent of what reached an outer surface across the four samples, and it was the underside rather than the sleeping side.
15. The fiberglass fragments recovered in that California health department study had calculated aerodynamic diameters of 30 to 50 microns. At that size they are inhalable into the nose, mouth and throat, and the authors judge them likely too large to reach the deep lung.
16. In that California health department study, the individual fiberglass fibres measured 5 to 10 microns thick. Thickness governs whether a fibre irritates skin on contact; aerodynamic diameter governs where it lands if inhaled.
17. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's own laboratory measured an average fibre length of 11.3 mm. The agency's analysis of ticking and barrier fabrics in mattresses was released under a freedom of information request.
18. Fibre diameters in that same US product safety laboratory analysis ran roughly 2 to 3.5 microns, averaged from 20 individual measurements per sample. One sample's fibres were too brittle to separate for a length measurement.
19. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission found no evidence of fiberglass breaking or moving through the ticking fabric on either mattress sample it analysed. Ticking is the outermost woven layer, the part a sheet touches.
20. A search of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's complaint database returned 128 complaints tied to mattress fiberglass exposure across calendar year 2020. The complaints named several different brands.

The honest version of this picture has two halves. Controlled testing on new mattresses found the fiberglass contained, with nothing on the sleeping surfaces and no fibres passing through the ticking. The complaint record points the other way: 128 fiberglass complaints were filed in a single year, and the product safety commission's own test plan states that reported exposure incidents attributed to mattresses "have increased dramatically over the last 4 years." The tested mattresses were new and unopened. The complaints involve mattresses already in use, which is a different condition and one no published study has measured. Both halves are real, and the gap between them is the part nobody has data on.
No mattress in either country's public recall database has ever been recalled for fiberglass. That holds across every mattress recall the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada have published.
21. Zero of 75 US mattress recalls mention fiberglass or glass fiber. A search of the commission's public recall database for mattress products returns 75 records, none of which names fiberglass as the hazard.

22. A second search of that same US recall database, by recall title rather than product name, returned 82 mattress records with zero fiberglass mentions. Searching by recall title rather than product name produces a wider set and the same result.
23. Zero mattress recalls in Health Canada's recalls and safety alerts database cite fiberglass. Canadian mattress recalls in the database cite flammability, entrapment or suffocation instead.
24. US mattress recalls rose to 8 in 2023, 10 in 2024 and 8 in 2025, against 1 to 3 per year from 2020 to 2022. Recall activity roughly tripled without a single fiberglass case among it.
25. Flammability failures account for 51 of the 75 mattress recalls in the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's database. Mattresses are being pulled from the market for failing fire tests, not for the material used to pass them.

128 complaints in one year against zero recalls is not a contradiction. A recall requires a defect or a breach of a mandatory standard, and a mattress that holds its fiberglass inside a sealed cover and passes its flammability test breaches nothing, however unhappy the owner is when it leaks.
Fiberglass is in mattresses because it is one of several fibres that pass the US open-flame test, and it is common in budget models where manufacturers choose the lowest-cost fire barrier. The federal standard, 16 CFR Part 1633, sets two limits that any mattress sold in the US must clear.
26. Under the US open-flame mattress standard, total heat release may not exceed 15 megajoules in the first 10 minutes of the test. That cap is what stops a burning mattress from flashing a bedroom over before anyone can leave it.
27. Peak heat release rate may not exceed 200 kilowatts across the full 30-minute test under 16 CFR Part 1633. That cap and the 15 megajoule limit together define the standard a fire barrier exists to meet.
28. The US open-flame mattress standard took effect on 1 July 2007. Mattresses made before that date were built to a cigarette-ignition rule only.
29. All or virtually all US residential mattresses now comply using a fire barrier rather than treated foam. That is the industry's own description in its filings to California, and it is why the choice of barrier fibre matters so much.
30. Bed-fire deaths fell 82% measured against a control group of unregulated upholstered furniture fires. Researchers at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology used that benchmark to separate the open-flame standard's effect from the general decline in home fires, publishing the estimate of the standard's impact on bed fire outcomes.
31. Bed-fire injuries fell 34% when measured against that same control group of unregulated upholstered furniture fires, while the raw count of bed fires fell 12%. The benchmarked estimates and the raw counts answer different questions, so one cannot be derived from the other.
32. The US open-flame mattress standard prevents roughly 65 fatalities a year. That is the study's central estimate of annual lives saved.
33. Measured per bed fire, fatalities fell 67% and injuries fell 25%. These come from a separate per-fire model with no upholstered-furniture benchmark, which is why they do not reconcile arithmetically with the 82% figure. Fires that still happen are markedly less deadly than they were.
34. US home fires cause at least 2,500 deaths and 11,000 injuries a year. The National Capital Poison Center reports that upholstered furniture and mattresses are the two items most often implicated in home fire deaths.
35. More than 25% of all US fires occur in home environments. The US open-flame mattress standard exists because beds are where fatal fires start.
Fiberglass holds its place in that system by not burning. It will not combust or decompose when a mattress ignites, so it acts as scaffolding that keeps char-forming fibres in position while everything around them burns. The standard did what it was built to do. Glass was one way to satisfy it, and other fibres satisfy it too.
Canada has no open-flame mattress standard. The federal Mattresses Regulations made under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act require a cigarette-ignition test and nothing more, which means a mattress built only to Canadian requirements has no regulatory reason to carry a fiberglass fire sock at all.
36. Under Canada's Mattresses Regulations, charring must not extend more than 50 mm horizontally from where the test cigarette sat. That is the pass criterion under the Canadian test method for combustion resistance of mattresses.
37. Canada's mattress test also requires that combustion stop within 10 minutes of the cigarette going out. A smouldering mattress that self-extinguishes inside that window passes.
38. Canada's regulation permits failure in no more than one test specimen. The regulation allows a single failing specimen across the test set before the mattress fails outright.
39. Canada has zero federal open-flame mattress requirements. The entire regulatory driver behind fiberglass adoption in the US has no Canadian counterpart.

40. California will ban the sale of mattresses containing textile fiberglass from 1 January 2027. That ban, described in the California Department of Public Health factsheet on fiberglass and mattresses, also stops upholsterers repairing mattresses and juvenile products with the material.
Both halves of the Canadian picture matter. Canada does not require the test that pushed fiberglass into mattresses, and Canada has not banned fiberglass either. Nothing in the Mattresses Regulations addresses it, so a mattress containing fiberglass can be sold legally to Canadians, and imported product is not screened for it at the border. Canadian sources spell it "fibreglass," which is worth knowing if you are searching product listings or filing a complaint. If avoiding the material is the point, the material list matters more than the country of sale, which is the logic behind every non-toxic mattress in Canada worth considering.
Fiberglass is an irritant, and the cancer question has an answer that most pages on this topic skip. Stating it accurately matters more than stating it dramatically.
41. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies glass wool and continuous filament glass as Group 3, not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans. The agency reviewed the literature at least twice and reached that conclusion in 2001. Group 3 is not a clean bill of health, and it is a long way from asbestos, which sits in Group 1.
42. US occupational safety regulators state there is insufficient evidence that synthetic mineral fibres cause respiratory disease in humans. That position appears in OSHA's guidance on synthetic mineral fibre health effects.
43. Fiberglass is a known skin, eye and respiratory irritant and an asthmagen. In occupational settings, exposure has been linked to recurrent chest infections and pulmonary fibrosis. Those findings come from workplace exposure levels, not bedroom ones.
44. Contact with fiberglass irritates the eyes and skin, and inhaling fragments irritates the nose, throat and lungs. California's health department lists breathing problems among the effects of inhaling the fragments.
45. One documented case involved a six-year-old with persistent skin and respiratory irritation traced to suspected fiberglass leakage from a mattress bought in 2018. The 2021 investigation ended with the family disposing of the mattress, the carpet and clothing that could not be cleaned.
The loss in that case was not a hospital admission. It was a house that had to be stripped, down to the mattress, the carpet, and every item the fibres could not be cleaned out of. No survey has ever put a reliable dollar figure on that kind of cleanup, so we will not invent one. Families with young children can sidestep the question at the point of purchase, which is why material transparency matters most on a child's bed and on any organic crib mattress you are weighing.
Checking the law label is the standard advice, and California's investigation showed it can fail. A missing mention of fiberglass on a tag is not proof the mattress is free of it.
46. Fiberglass was not listed at all on the label of one of the two mattresses California investigators found it in. On the other, it was disclosed, but not in the prominent flammability section of the law label where a buyer would look.
47. Both mattresses that California investigators found fiberglass in carried a CertiPUR-US label, which certifies the foam inside a mattress and not the cover. The certification most likely to reassure a buyer about fiberglass is the one that does not cover the layer holding it.
Both failures happened on mattresses a buyer could reasonably have believed were checked. One carried no disclosure at all, and the other buried it away from the flammability section, and both wore a certification badge that says nothing about the cover. Every certificate covers a defined scope, and reading that scope is what tells you whether it says anything about the layer you are worried about. Fiberglass is not the only way to pass a flammability test, and the industry's own filings name what took its place.
48. US mattress producers report nine distinct flame-resistant fibre groups used to meet the open-flame standard. Silica-embedded rayon, modacrylic, para-aramid and wool are among them, each with a different mechanism.
49. Wool is listed in the mattress industry's filings to California regulators as a thermal shield with no added flame-retardant chemical. In the association's own fibre table, the flame-retardant chemical column for wool reads not applicable, because the fibre resists ignition on its own.
50. Wool's share of US mattress interior fire barriers rose 54-fold while fiberglass fell out of the reported range. Going from 0.1% to 5.4% is a small base growing fast, and it is the clearest movement in the dataset.

Wool is the material we build with. Five checks give you a real answer, in descending order of reliability. The check most people reach for first, opening the cover to look, is the one that causes the damage.
Never unzip a cover to check. Opening the zipper is the single action that turns a contained material into a contaminated bedroom, and it is what the health guidance tells you to avoid.
Stop sleeping on the mattress, keep the room closed off, and do not sweep. California's health department publishes the cleanup protocol, and the sequence matters more than the effort.
Items that cannot be cleaned get thrown out. In the case California investigated, that meant the mattress, the carpet and clothing.

The prevalence picture is better than the panic suggests and worse than the industry's silence implies. Fiberglass sat in 13.1% of US mattress interior fire barriers six years ago, fell to 8.6%, and is now reported by fewer than four surveyed producers. Controlled testing found it contained inside new mattresses, with nothing on the sleeping surfaces, and no mattress in either country has ever been recalled over it. The material is a real irritant, it is not asbestos, and the exposure risk is almost entirely about what happens when a cover is opened or torn.
For Canadian buyers, the fact that changes the decision is regulatory. Canada requires a cigarette test and no open-flame test, so nothing in Canadian law pushes a manufacturer toward a glass fire sock, and nothing in Canadian law stops one from being sold here either. That puts the decision back on the material list rather than the country of sale.
