Utilizing The Most Sustainable & Natural Materials Available
At Fawcett, we choose the most environmentally friendly, sustainable and natural materials available. Duane and Ross, our founders, set out to build a healthy mattress. Something that they would like to sleep on, or would build for a friend. From Fawcett’s inception this meant eliminating toxic fire retardants and petroleum based foams – among other nasty chemicals found in 95% of mattresses produced globally.
Instead, Fawcett utilizes 100% Natural Talalay Latex tapped from sustainably harvested rubber tree forests. The rubber, is tapped from Havea Braseiliensis trees in a similar process to how maple syrup is obtained. Organic Cotton and Joma Wool are also key components of our mattresses.
We also carry a number of products that have various certifications. Our newly procured Fawcett sheets and bedding meet the Oeko Tex Made in Green, Oeko Tex 100 Standard and the Oeko Tex STeP certifications. The Down products we carry are Downmark certified, and our wool Kouchini pillows are Woolmark certified.
We strive to obtain both materials and suppliers which engage in sustainable and socially responsible business practices.
Cradle to Cradle
Cradle to Cradle Certified® is a globally recognized measure of safer, more sustainable products made for the circular economy. The 100% Natural Vita Talalay Latex we use at Fawcett is certified GOLD by the prestigious European standard.
To obtain certification, products are assessed for environmental and social performance across five critical sustainability categories: material health, material reuse, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.

Global Organic Latex Standard
Fawcett builds mattresses primarily with 100% Natural Vita Talalay Latex. However, we also are able to build with GOLS Certified Organic 100% Dunlop Latex upon request.
GOLS Certified Organic Latex is actually less costly for us to acquire, compared to 100% Natural Vita Talalay Latex. The Dunlop process is more simplistic. We prefer to build with 100% Natural Vita Talalay Latex and feel it is a superior product in terms of feel and longevity. Our 100% Natural Latex meets the stringent GOLD Cradle to Cradle Standard.
Oeko-Tex® 100
When a textile article carries the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, you can be certain that every component of this article, i.e. every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article therefore is harmless to human health. Our mattress ticking (outer layer), Fawcett organic bedding, Kouchini wool pillows and duvets are all Oeko-Tex® 100 Certified.

Oeko-Tex® Made in Green
Our Fawcett sheets are also certified as MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX®. This certification is a traceable consumer label for sustainable textiles. This label proves that the product has been tested for harmful chemicals, and that it has been manufactured using environmentally-friendly processes under socially responsible working conditions.
Every product bearing a MADE IN GREEN label or hang tag has its own unique product ID or QR code, allowing you to trace the article’s supply chain in a transparent manner.
STeP By Oeko-Tex®
The acronym STeP stands for “Sustainable Textile Production”. It’s an independent certification program for brands, companies, and manufacturers in the textile industry wanting to provide complete transparency in their supply chain.
STeP covers a wide variety of corporate practices including environmental chemical management, environmental management and performance, social responsibility, quality management, as well as health protection and safety at work. Fawcett’s branded sheets meet the STeP certification.

DOWNMARK®
DOWNMARK® is the globally recognized symbol of quality issued by the Down Association of Canada, a non-profit organization committed to helping consumers buy genuine down products with confidence.
For over 40 years, DOWNMARK® has been the trusted source for information and the only independent group in Canada serving to educate consumers, support the development of the highest quality standards and promote ethical harvesting practices. Our Portier & Dunn duvets and pillows meet the stringent DOWNMARK® certification.
Columbia Forest Products
The original cost-competitive decorative hardwood plywood without the formaldehyde. PureBond® is Columbia Forest Products’ exclusive formaldehyde-free innovation for hardwood plywood assembly.
Replacing traditional urea formaldehyde (UF) hardwood plywood construction with soy-based PureBond enables Columbia to eliminate added formaldehyde from assembly of domestic veneer-core and pMDI composite core hardwood plywood core panels. We use Columbia products to manufacture our Fawcett beds.

Control Union
The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) was developed by Control Union. GOLS outlines requirements for latex products made from organic raw materials, as well as for material from non-organic origins. To achieve GOLS certification, a product must contain more than 95% certified organic raw material.
The GOLS standard features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements and polymer and filler percentages. Fawcett’s Organic Dunlop Latex is GOLS certified by Control Union.
Natural Talalay Latex
Rubber trees are actually ‘tapped’ – like a maple tree is for syrup – and the liquid sap is folded, vacuum injected, flash frozen and then vulcanized (baked) into a uniform bubble distribution.
The result? An incredibly resilient, long lasting and supportive natural rubber. It just so happens that Natural Talalay Latex is also temperature neutral. Not too warm, and not too cold. It has a breathable structure which dissipates moisture and therefore is highly resistant to mold, fungus and dust mites.

Handmade in Victoria Canada
Fawcett Mattress is unique. Most mattress retailers don’t actually make their mattresses. Fawcett sources the most sustainable, high quality mattress components available.
We manufacture, assemble and build a customized sleep solution for our clients. Built in Canada. Made by local tradespeople. No middlemen. The result is simply a better mattress. Non-toxic, non off-gassing, with premium, healthy, sustainable materials. All this for about the same cost as the big box retailers that offer toxic petroleum-based-foam ‘chemical baths’.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
A textile product carrying the GOTS label grade ‘organic’ must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers. Social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) must be met by all processors and manufacturers.

LGA & Greenguard® Gold Certified
When we’re hand crafting your Fawcett mattress we need to use some adhesive for assembly of components. Adhesive? That’s a fancy name for glue. Glues are usually toxic.
However, the adhesive we sourced is actually LGA & Oeko-Tex® Eco Passport certified.
It’s actually made from seashells and is water based. So, rest easy. Glue doesn’t have to smell, or be toxic.
Yes, it costs more, but hey – you’re worth it.
Island Good
Fawcett is a member of Island Good. Island Good is trademarked and licensed by the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, a non-government, non-profit, regional economic development organization serving all of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
The single mandate is to help ensure a vital and sustainable Island economy. Hey, even if you don’t live on Vancouver Island, it’s a fantastic part of Canada to support. Come visit us. We’ll buy you a coffee or maybe even a craft beer. 😉

Essent Wind Power
Our 100% Natural Vita Talalay Latex Supplier makes socially responsible power purchasing decisions. They purchased over 10 million kilowatts of renewable power for their factory in the Netherlands.
This power is produced by a Belgian offshore wind farm, on the Thornton Bank, in the North Sea. It is 100% produced by wind turbines, thereby helping to reduce climate change.
Woolmark Certified Wool
Fawcett offers premium Kouchini wool pillows, duvets and mattress and pillow protectors. All are Woolmark certified, created with 100% new wool.
Woolmark certified yarns, fabrics and garments are independently tested in order to qualify for certification. These tests include a test for wool content to verify the purity, colour fastness to light, durability, wash testing and colour fastness to liquid. Wool naturally cools in summer, and helps keep you warm in winter. It’s also naturally fire resistant, eliminating the need for toxic fire retardants found in many other mattresses.
